While not everyone may feel the need to escape the corporate world, many workers remain because they feel trapped in their job with no way out.  Based on her experience and in meeting other disenchanted workers, Pamela Skillings wrote “Escape from America, a Practical Guide for Designing the Career of Your Dreams.”

In the book Ms. Skillings discusses many feasible options available to be considered, many of which are possible due to technology and the more open environment of today’s marketplace.  Possibilities include starting up a business, freelancing and telecommuting.

A career coach, author, journalist and entrepreneur, Pamela Skillings spent twelve years working as a marketing executive for major New York companies. Eventually, she realized corporate life wasn’t for her. In 2005, she launched her own company.

I agree with Pam’s philosophy that everyone should think as an entrepreneur as related to their career. In countless observations through the years, I have been amazed at those who decidedly did not take this view, blindly choosing to follow like lambs leading off to their corporate demise.

This book resonates with me, because our family comes from a long line of entrepreneurs (on both sides), since arriving here in America several generations ago. I escaped from Corporate America in 1982 to start up my own business, and haven’t looked back.

Innovation gives rise to new business models, and this book gives testimony to that. Based on my reading the excerpts, this book offers insight and encouragement to those who are ready to break free.
